AIRPLANE TRAVEL TIPS
Tips for Air Travel with a Power Wheelchair
To prepare for airport travel with a power wheelchair, book your flight with the airline’s special assistance department well in advance, and confirm your needs with all airlines involved. Arrive at the airport early, request an airport wheelchair if needed, and prepare for security checks by having all loose items in your carry-on. Secure your wheelchair’s battery and any detachable parts and label the chair with your contact information.
Detailed Tips:
Book Early and Communicate:
- Contact the airline’s accessibility/disability department at least 48 hours before your flight.
- Indicate that you’ll be traveling with a power wheelchair, specify the battery type (e.g., gel cell), and whether you need assistance with boarding or transferring.
- Let them know if you need wheelchair assistance or guided assistance.
- Request gate delivery of your wheelchair if desired.
Arrive Early and Prepare:
- Arrive at the airport 1 hour before the scheduled check-in time.
- Have your wheelchair’s dimensions, weight, and battery specifications readily available.
- Pack a duffel bag for removable parts like cushions, armrests, and side guards.
- Consider air tagging your wheelchair with an iPhone for easy tracking.
Security Check:
- Proceed to the airline’s ticket counter, check in your wheelchair, and request an airport wheelchair to use until you board.
- TSA will screen your wheelchair, possibly requiring a hand-pat down, so be prepared.
- Put loose items in your carry-on bag before the security checkpoint.
Protect Your Wheelchair:
- Remove and secure the battery if necessary.
- Inspect the wheelchair for loose parts or potential issues.
- Use padding or protective covers for vulnerable areas like controls and armrests.
- Take photos of the wheelchair before and after checking it in and document any damage immediately.
Label and Document:
- Attach a tag with your contact information, including a phone number and instructions on how to operate the wheelchair.
- Provide instructions on how the wheelchair should be handled, including assembly or disassembly.
Onboard:
- Passengers with disabilities typically board first.
- You may be transferred from your power wheelchair to a narrow aisle wheelchair, and then to your seat.
- If you need assistance, inform flight attendants about your needs.
At Destination:
- Your power wheelchair should be waiting for you at the jetway upon arrival.
- Confirm your wheelchair’s condition before signing any paperwork.
